From Caterpillar to Butterfly… and Beyond
by Sandra Sweetman
The Joke That Stuck
When I was a kid, I heard a joke:
Two caterpillars look up at a butterfly flying past them. One turns to the other and says, “You’ll never get me up in one of those!”
For years, I was that caterpillar in a different sense.
I dared to move forward, to make choices and embrace the unknown. I had no idea what kind of butterfly I could become.
Taking the Leap
At twenty-seven, I stood at a crossroads, facing a life-changing decision.
I jumped in anyway with the thought: “I’m only twenty-seven, the world is my oyster.”
Exciting? Yes.
Daunting? Absolutely.
Impossible to predict? Totally.
And yes, oysters sometimes come with grit.
When Life Flips the Script
At fifty, change arrived whether I wanted it or not.
My husband Nick, my rock, my partner, my teachers of wings, began his journey of leaving this planet.
Suddenly, I was a widow with two teenage daughters and a future that looked nothing like what I had envisioned.
At first, I thought my dream life had ended.
Then, during those months of his illness, a shift happened.
I found myself saying:
“My dream life isn’t on hold. This is part of it.”
After he passed, another shift:
“My dream life isn’t what I thought it would be. I am now co-creating a new dream life.”
Blank Canvas, Big Possibilities
Here’s the thing:
I had no clue what that new dream would look like.
What I had was a blank canvas.
And the only way to fill it was by doing my inner work – clearing old agreements, releasing fears, opening to possibility.
Stroke by stroke, it started to take shape.
The outer path unfolded as I painted a new one within.
And with it, amazing opportunities came my way.
When one journey ends, it doesn’t mean the story is over.
It means another path is already waiting.
We just can’t see it until we start the inner journey.
25 Years Later
Now here I am, almost 25 years later (September 23, 2025 marks that anniversary), looking back with gratitude for the miracles, the lessons, and even the blank canvas.
Life didn’t stop unfolding then and it still hasn’t.
My painting keeps getting bolder and more awesome.
It continues to change, evolving into something even more vibrant, expansive, and awesome with each passing year.
I have had my share of disappointments.
Every unexpected challenge.
Every unexpected detour.
Each has opened into something new.
My journey hasn’t been about avoiding loss or pretending everything is fair.
It’s been about meeting life as it is, then choosing how to paint with the colours I continue to create.
Why Life Unbounded Matters
That’s why my course, Life Unbounded, is so close to my heart.
It’s about uncovering those silent agreements we’ve made with life without realizing it.
The ones that keep us stuck in our cocoons long after it’s time to stretch our wings.
Nick and my daughters taught me unconditional love.
My mother taught me resilience (and plenty of feistiness).
Life taught me that miracles are real, only if you’re willing to see them.
And 25 years on, I can say this:
I still believe in miracles.
I still embrace change.
And I am continually astonished at how much more “life unbounded” there is waiting when you let yourself unfold into it.
Where Are You on Your Journey?
Still the cautious caterpillar?
Wrapped tight in the cocoon?
Or maybe you’ve stretched your wings and you’re not sure how far they’ll carry you?
Peek at what’s holding you back.
Wherever you are, I invite you to discover what silent agreements might be holding you back.
And if you’re ready to clear them, Life Unbounded is designed to give you the space, tools, and perspective to do just that.
After all, the world doesn’t just need more butterflies:
It needs butterflies willing to fly into the unknown.
